The Small Breeder Challenge is an AOBA sanctioned show, specifically for farms with 20 or fewer ARI registered females. (Male alpacas do not count toward breeder size.)
The show allows smaller farms to compete strictly against farms with similar resources. The show concept may best be analogized to high school or college sports, where schools with smaller numbers of students play in a different division than much larger ones. It does not mean that the education is of less quality, the games less entertaining, or the competition less fierce. It simply gives schools the opportunity to compete against other schools with comparatively similar resources.
We are very excited about this new show, and hope many breeders falling into the eligible size category will make plans to compete. Helen Humphreys will be the judge for the The Small Breeders Challenge.

Rules and Guidelines
Modifications for 2012
· A minimum of four alpacas per color will be required for a Color Championship.
· Futurity Sale Consignors whose consignments go on to place in the Futurity Show for the new owner will receive bonus points toward premium awards.
· Futurity Payouts are prorated in accordance with the point system, with 70% going to owners/exhibitors and 30% to Herd Sire owners.
· For the past few years we have guaranteed payment for Color Champion through 4th place. For 2012, this will be changed to guaranteed payment for Color Champion through 3rd. As always, the exact amount of the payouts will be determined by total show purse and actual expenses.
- Open to alpacas 6 months to less than 3 years. Entries pay an entry fee.
- Entries must be the offspring of a nominated herd-sire, or pay an additional self nomination fee (self-nomination fee is typically 50% of a Herd Sire Nomination fee).
- Only a herd sire’s owner may nominate him for the show.
- All Judging is done per AOBA rules, but as a Futurity, the show does not have the same entry number requirements to be allowed to award color championships.
- Futurity Payout- 80% to entry owners, 20% to Herd sire owner
- Premium Awards- Breeder of the Year S & H, Resv. Breeder of the Year S& H. Large, Medium & Small Farm divisions, Large: 100 or more ARI females owned, Medium: 21-99 ARI females owned, Small: 20 or fewer ARI females owned.
- Scoring for Breeder of the Year Awards: All points won by all entries of the farm, and all herd sire points won by the offspring of the farm’s nominated herd sires count toward Breeder of the Year points.
- Premium Award- Herd Sire of the Year. Champion & Reserve, H&S, 2 divisions- White/Lite, and Colored. Only the points of the 5 top performing offspring of a nominated herd sire count toward the HSY award.
- Points- Awards calculations are done using the following point scores 6th-5, 5th-6, 4th-7, 3rd-8, 2nd-10, 1st-12, RCC-15, CC-18
-
The above is total points per win. 80% of the score is given to the entry/exhibitor, 20% is given to the Herd Sire/Herd Sire Owner. (For example: For 2nd place there are 10 points total. If you own the the entry, but not the herd sire, you will receive 80% of the point total, or 8 points. If you own the nominated herd sire of an entry that finishes 2nd, but do not own the entry, you will receive 20% of the total points, in this case 2 points. If you own both the entry and the nominated herd sire, you would receive a total of 10 points (8+2).
- Futurity Payouts are also made according to the same point scale on a pro-rata basis, with 80% going to owners/exhibitors and 20% to Herd Sire owners.
- Farms participating in the Futurity Show may not compete in the Small Breeder Challenge Show. (This includes family and employees of farms participating in The Futurity.)

- When a color group has 5-9 huacayas / 4-7 suri from at least two different classes, a single (Small Breeders Challenge Color Group Winner) trophy will be given.
- If total group is 4 or more suris, or 5 or more huacayas, that group is to be run as a single color group, and not combined with another color group.
